Keggy the Keg is at it again. Our beloved unofficial mascot has been featured in a 2-minute clip that aired on ESPN UNITE, a late-night comedy program on ESPN. The video chronicles Keggy’s debut, his struggles and his subsequent comeback, and it has received over 1,400 views to date.

A representative from ESPNU, the network’s college sports channel, contacted the Jack-O-Lantern before the start of Fall term, wanting to do a story on the history of Keggy, particularly his kidnappings, according to Matt Garczynski ’14, the editor-in-chief of the Jack-O-Lantern, who oversees the Keggy’s operations.

The clip was shot the day of the first home football game against Butler University and features commentary from both Garczynski and Kenny Baclawski ’12, the former Editor-in-Chief of the Jack-O-Lantern. Despite the video being edited into a short clip, omitting one of Keggy’s kidnappings, both Baclawski and Garczynski said they were satisfied with the end result.

“[The video] got a lot of good points across,” Baclawski said. “We were really pleased with it.”

“Considering the whole thing was tongue-in-cheek, any problems with the facts are forgivable,” Garczyski said. “While the piece implied Keggy is emotionally scarred, he is actually just as fun-loving and carefree as ever.”

According to Baclawski, there is even talk of a longer director’s cut version making its way to YouTube.

Baclawski and Garczynski said they both appreciated the exposure that Keggy and his story received from the video.

“It’s not about the views,” Baclawski said. “It was just nice to have people come up and ask us to tell Keggy’s story in our own words.”

The clip showed an often-forgotten side of Keggy, Garczynski said.

“People often forget that Keggy can be seen as both a sincere product of the dominant Dartmouth drinking culture and a silly jab at the stereotype,” Garczynski said. “Everyone seems to try to box him into one category or the other. At the end of the day, he’s just fun. I appreciated the segment for at least portraying that.”
